Answer:
In 2000, I moved to Wellington in order to pursue music with more intention, the resulting band Shift being the vehicle with which to do so. This increased focus on music led to more songs being written to add to my catalog, some which made it as far as the band, some which did not, but by the close of 2001, I had a new group of tracks that were both symptomatic of my new focus and some of my best writing to date, easily matching the golden period of '97-'98. Fast forward a coupl'a years to after the breakup of Shift and my only solo projects, and some of the songs from this era became staples of my acoustic set which I would use throughout the next few years before setting into recording properly for myself.
2006's Acoustic Graffiti is my first solo album, an audio record of who I was as a writer and performer at that time, and this album Achilles is effectively what that first album would have been if I had begun straight onto fully recording it. All the tracks on this album were fully written by 2004, making this offering at its very least 15 years in the making.
The tracks on Achilles then come from a time when I was really focusing on a quality of songwriting, as well as the courage to try different ideas in order to challenge myself. It's representative of my best era of songwriting, although it even grabs a couple of tracks from my other dominant era ('97-'98) to bolster its ranks. When I first settled on the goal to record everything I had ever written in 2009, I purposely blocked this selection of songs off to save until the very end, endeavouring to make this collection not only one of quality, but to use it as a carrot to completing my goal. Some 26 releases and 10 years later, I am finally here - and, with just one album to go (the future Regression Suite album), my goal is all but assured.
When I saw 2004's Troy, I loved the power of the character Achilles so much, that I knew I had to use that name, hence the album title. The cover was painted many years ago by my wife Jo before we met and I loved it so much, I have used it here.
This album represents my best era of writing and its arguably my best recorded album. May you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed making it!
