Aluminum sulfate is an ionic compound, which is a combination of positive and negative ions. Ions are charged atoms, and they can be either mono a tomic ions (single atoms) or polyatomic (multiple atoms combined to form a charged particle). Aluminum forms a +3 ion, Al+3, and sulfate is the -2, polyatomic ion, (SO4)-2.
