Let the denominator be x.
Given that the numerator of a rational number is 4 less than denominator = x - 4.
Therefore the original fraction = x - 4/x ------- (1)
Now,
if 1 is added to numerator and denominator both, the rational number becomes 1/2.
= > 2(x - 3) = x + 1
= > 2x - 6 = x + 1
= > 2x - x = 1 + 6
= > x = 7.
Therefore the original fraction = 7 - 4/7
= 3/7.
Therefore the rational number = 3/7.
