This was contradictory to the spirit of nationalism. How? Simply its aim or even method was not political rather social or religious. It talked against opium use, alcohol etc. However, this movement also emerged as a threat for the French. This is because it made the will of the people strong, the will that could topple the French from Indo-China. Thus it will not be wrong to say that knowingly unknowingly. both movements helped to finish French regime in Vietnam.
