DUE TO COMPRESSION THE GAS MOLECULES COLLIDE WITH EACH OTHER CREATING FRICTION AND THEY HAVE LESS SPACE BETWEEN EACH MOLECULE,BUT WHEN A RAPID EXPANSION HAPPENS THE GAS MOLECULES ARE MUCH FREE TO MOVE AS THEY HAVE MUCH MORE MOLECULAR SPACE BETWEEN EACH MOLECULE.

Answer:
A RAPID COMPRESSION HEATS A GAS.
BUT, A RAPID EXPANSION COOLS IT BECAUSE,
It cools because the gas molecules do work on the surroundings by transferring some of their kinetic energy to the surroundings. Think of the gas molecules in a container (say an insulated cylinder with a moveable piston on one end).
