1. 1956

The Sinhala language in the year 1956 was recognised as the official language of Sri Lanka.

2. The system of checks and balances ensures that no one branch of the national govt. gains too much power. A system of checks and balance prevents any one branch of govt. from having lot of power. aall three branches of the govt. are kept in balance with a checks and balance system in place.

3. Characteristics of power sharing:

Power sharing is a system of governance where all the communities in the society participate in the policy making. In power sharing, the majority cannot impose it's will over the minority communities.

4. The 1956 Act introduced by Sinhalese govt. made Sinhale only official language of Sri Lanka which increased the feeling of alienation among the Tamils of Sri Lankan.

5. Belgium government has the power regarding culture, education and language related issues.

6. Theravada Bhuddism is the official religion of Sri Lanka, with about 70.2 percent as the country's population as followers.

7. Sinhalese formed majority in terms of population in Sri Lanka.

8. After independence in 1948 the democratically elected Sri Lankan government adopted a series of Majoritarian measures to establish Sinhala supremacy by passing an Act in 1956. The measures were like; Sinhala was recognised as the only official language in Sri Lanka. Tamil language was not given due importance.

9. Power sharing is the need in democracy bcoz of the following:

It helps in reducing the possibility of conflict between the social groups. Since social conflict often leads to violence and political instability, power sharing is a good way to ensure the stability of political order.
