first of all u have to draw a line segment.From 0 take 2 units (2 cm),mark the point of 2cm as A .Then mark 90 degrees such that it forms a right angle triangle.Then mark it as B.From the line AB draw a 90 degrees at point B of 2 cm.Then join it to O.Take 1 cm and from B draw an arc.Mark the point where it meets the line as P.This.is √2.

Hello Mate!

So, this is an NCERT Problem which you have where you are not able to understand what example 3 means to say.

Representing an irrational number by triangle method ( as given in NCERT ) is.

We take an example 3 which is to represent root 2 on number line;

First think of two numbers when put in pythogorean theorum will give you out root 2

Take 1 unit from origin and reach till 1, here draw an perpendicular 1 unit from that point.

You will get base and perpendicular as 1 unit respectively.

 {h}^{2}  =  {b}^{2}  +  {p}^{2} \\  {h}^{2}   =  {1}^{2} +   {1}^{2}  \\  {h}^{2}  = 1 + 1 \\ h =  \sqrt{2}
So hypotenuse you will get will is _/2

Now measure perpendicular from compass and take that point where perpendicular starts as center draw an arc.

Why pythogorean theorum?

Because this triangle formed is right triangle.
