Is Russia a true Democracy ?

Firstly we should know what a Democracy is ?

A democratic nation is one in which the citizens are given the most power. In a democracy, the citizens choose their representatives by referendum or elections. In this system the public or the citizens enjoy power and are kept happy and satisfied.

Now, which type of government does Russia have ?

Russia is ofcourse not a Monarchy but a federation. It's official name is Russian Federation . It has Federal dominant party, semi-presidential constitutional republic.

What is a dominant party government ?

A dominant party government is one in which one and only one party or group of party is allowed to govern the country. Its definition is given as "Any ruling party that stays in powers for more than one consecutive term".

Russia's Case

As far as Russia is considered, it believes in the dominant party government system. we all know that once Russia had a communist government (USSR) and it broke mainly by outside powers. Therefore, people of Russia are used to one party government system. Therefore, they have a dominant party government system.

Is Russia a true Democracy ?

Answer to this question is yes , as well as no. If we see from the people's side, then Russia is a democracy because people of Russia are happy with the government system they have. They are satisfied by their government, thus according to them Russia is a Democracy. But if we look into the definition of Democracy then Russia can be denied to be in the list of democratic nations. Russia has only one ruling president i.e, Valadimir Putin . The Constitution of Russia hasn't recognised other candidates other than Putin since it has become a Republic. These acts violate the definition of a true Democracy and thus Russia can be called as non democratic.

But as far as general public is concerned, The public has only made Putin the president of Russia and they are only going to elect him as a president till the year 2036 Therefore, Russia can be considered as a Democratic Nation.

hope it helps
