Carbon dioxide has a formula of

CO2, and limewater is saturated calcium hydroxide solution, which has a formula of Ca(OH)2

So

CO2(g)+Ca(OH)2(aq)→ CaCO3(s)+H2O(l)

That's why you see the white precipitate when you pass some carbon dioxide to limewater. However, if you pass excess carbon dioxide to limewater, what you will have is a clear solution. It is because excess carbon dioxide will react with calcium carbonate and water to form calcium hydrogencarbonate, which is soluble.

CaCO3(s)+CO2(g)+H2O(l) → Ca(HCO3)2 (aq)
