This is because current is like a flow (of electrons) which basically passes through the equipment so that's y an ammeter is connected in series to allow entire current to flow through itself then only it could measure it's value…..
Voltage on the other hand is the difference of potential b/w two points or more clearly it appears across the equipment so to measure that difference we have to connect the terminals of the voltmeter to the terminals of the equipment which is called as parallel connection… then only it could measure the voltage across the equipment.
