Acetic acid (CH3COOH) to Acetonitrile ( CH3CN)

Acetonitrile is basically methyl cyanide.

cyanides may also be named as derivatives of the acids which they give on hydrolysis. For this purpose, the terminal "ic acid" of the acid is replaced by the suffix "onitrile" . Example:

CH3CN on hydrolysis gives CH3COOH .

CH3CN + 2H2O---->CH3COOH+ NH3 ( in presence of H+)

therefore, methyl cyanide can also be named as ---

"acetic acid"-"ic acid"+"onitrile"= "acetonitrile"
