Let the common ratio be p .

Since the intercepts are in the ratio 2 : 5 , therefore the intercept on the x-axis will be 2p and the intercept on the y-axis will be 5p .

The equation of line in intercept form is

\frac{x}{a}+\frac{y}{b} =1

\frac{x}{2p}+\frac{y}{5p}=1\\

Since this line passes through the point (-1 , 4) , therefore this point will satisfy the equation of the line .

Hence , here x = -1 and y = 4 .

\frac{-1}{2p}+\frac{4}{5p}=1\\  \\\frac{-5p+8p}{10p^2}=1\\ \\10p=3\\\\p=\frac{3}{10}

Thus the equation of the line is

\frac{x}{2} +\frac{y}{5}=\frac{3}{10}\\  \\\frac{5x+2y}{10}=\frac{3}{10}\\  \\5x+2y=3
