Expressing the following in p/q form in which p and q are integers and q ≠ 0
(i) 0.5 (bar on 5)
Solution :
Let, x = 0.55555 ..............................(1)
On multiplying both sides of equation.(1) by 10 we get,
10x = 5.55555 ..................................(2)
On subtracting equation.(1) from equation.(2) we get,
10x - x = (5.55555......) - (0.55555......)
=> 9x = 5
=> x = 5/9

(ii) 0.234 (bar on 34)
Let, x = 0.2343434.............................(1)
On multiplying both sides of equation.(1) by 10 we get,
10x = 2.343434...................................(2)
On multiplying both sides of equation.(2) by 100 we get,
1000x = 234.343434.........................(3)
On subtracting equation.(2) from equation.(3) we get,
1000x - 10x = (234.3434.....) - (2.3434.....)
=> 990x = 232
=> x = 232/990

(iii) 3.225 (bar on 225)
Let x = 3.225225225........................(1)
On multiplying both sides of equation.(1) by 1000 we get,
