Hyperconjugation is the stabilising interaction that results from the interaction of the electrons in a σ-bond (usually C-H or C-C) with an adjacent empty or partially filled p-orbital or a π-orbital to give an extended molecular orbital that increases the stability of the system.
eg: ethyl cation, in which the +vely charged carbon atom has an empty p orbital. One of the C-H bonds of the methyl group can align in the plane of this empty p orbital and the electrons constituting the C-Hbond in the plane with this p orbital.
In hyperconjugation, the delocalisation of electrons takes place through overlap between s orbital and p bond or p orbital.

Consider the example of propene molecule.

Greater the number of alkyl groups attached to a positively charged carbon atom, greater is the hyperconjugation and stabilization of the cation.
