Answer:

Let present age of son = x

Age one year ago = x - 1

Age of father one year ago = 8(x - 1)

Present age of son = x

Age of father = x^2

The difference in their ages won't change, even after years:

8(x - 1) - (x - 1) = x^2 - x

=> 8x - 8 - x + 1 = x^2 - x

=> x^2 - 8x + 7 = 0

=> x^2 - 7x - x + 7 = 0

=> x(x - 7) - 1(x - 7) = 0

=> (x - 1)(x - 7) = 0

=> x = 1, 7

Since the son can't be 0 years old, a year before, age of son is 7 years.

Age of father = x^2 = 49 years
