the 2 types of canals in northern India are ;- 
1. Perennial canals- they are taken out of perennial rivers for irrigation purposes over a large area. they have regulating systems at their head to control the water supply in them

2. inundation canals- they are flood water canals or temporary canals. they help divert the flood water but they may flood the fields. they don't have any regulating systems at their head
