a) Let a be the candidate who won the election
and b lost the election
and total number of votes be x

Votes % won by a = Votes % won by b - total number of votes
= 60%

ATQ, Votes won by a - Votes won by b = 15000

(100 - 40)/100 × x - ( 40/100 × x ) = 15000

60/100 × x - 40x/100 = 15000

6x/10 - 4x/10 = 15000

(Multiplying both sides by 10)

6x -4x = 150000

2x = 150000

x = 150000/2

x= 75000

therefore total number of votes = 75,000

b) votes won by the winning candidate = percentage of votes × total number of votes

= 60/100 × 75000
= 6×7500
=45,000 votes
