The term diatonic basically means two tones. This refers to the two different kinds of steps that occur in major scales, whole step and half step. ... But the notes contained in pentatonicscales can be considered to be diatonic to a key when the same notes are found in theparent major scale.

A major pentatonic (five note scale) is formed by choosing the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6thnotes of a major scale. So therefore, the C major pentatonic or five note scale includes the keys of C, D, E, G, A. The minor pentatonicincludes the same notes of a majorpentatonic.

Answer:

Pentatonic scales do not contain half steps. But the notes contained in pentatonic scales can be considered to be diatonic to a key when the same notes are found in the parent major scale. ... When using the C major pentatonic scale while playing in the key of C, the notes are diatonic even though the scale is not.
