DIRECT SPEECH :
In direct speech (Narration/quotation) the speaker's exact words are given .
eg. John said ,"I am trying for a job here"
(note the punctuation)
1: The exact words of the speaker are put in inverted commas (" ").
2: There is comma after the reporting verb.
3: The quoted words begin with a capital letter.
INDIRECT SPEECH :
In indirect speech (Narration) only the substance of what the speaker said is given and not the exact words.
eg. John said that he was trying for a job there
NOTE that the indirect speech is in the form of ordinary sentence and has no special punctuation.
hope that helps !!!
