A drone lifts off, gently at first and then with gusto, from the rooftop of a multi-storey house located in Chitli Qabar market near Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. As it hovers over the dense jumble of houses and bylanes of Chandni Mahal below, home to 600,000 people who live in a two square kilometre area - its steady whir gets the attention of children playing on neighbouring rooftops, who point out the 'chhota plane' to friends. It is the evening relaxation hour (2-6 pm) at one of Delhi’s deadliest containment zones. Thirteen deaths have occurred in Chandni Mahal, making this an area where strict social distancing should be followed. Except, the idea has few takers here.

Hundreds of people are thronging the bylanes, chatting, buying supplies and generally mingling. Apart from essentials, ice cream, bakery products, clothes, toys and footwear are on sale here, in a supposed containment zone. The police are doing what they can to promote awareness. “Bheed ikatta na kare. Kuchh meter ki doori par chale. Bachchon ko saath na laayen. Yaad rakhe, corona ko harana hai (Do not congregate. Follow social distancing. Do not bring children along. Remember, we have to defeat coronavirus).” At a distance, a few cops can be seen stopping people from entering the zone, at a check post, past three layers of barricades. “So you are coming to meet your daughter? What is more important: socialising or keeping safe? Go back to your home. This is no time for milna-julna,” says a constable to a woman in a burqa sitting with a man in a handpulled rickshaw. “The work of our force has multiplied and diversified. Crowd management is definitely a difficult task especially in huge containment zones,” Delhi police commissioner SN Shrivastava told ET Magazine.
