x = a+1/a, y = a-1/a

to find, x^4 + y^4 - 2x^2y^2

=>x^4 + y^4 - 2x^2y^2 = (x^2 - y^2)^2

(x^2 - y^2)^2

= [(a+1/a)^2 - (a-1/a)^2]^2

= [(a^2 + 1/a^2 +2)] - (a^2 + 1/a^2 - 2)]

= (a^2 + 1/a^2 +2 - a^2 -1/a^2 + 2)^2

= (4)^2

= 16

So, x^4 + y^4 - 2x^2y^2 = 16

Hope it helps !!!!
