hey... Mate here's ur answer !!

Pure alumina has very high melting point (2050 degree C) and in molten state, it is bad conductor of electricity.

Hence, a molten cryolite is added to alumina to,

a } dissolve alumina

b } decrease it's melting point to abt 950 degree C.

c } increase the conductivity of alumina.



In this process, aluminium is obtained at cathode.
