1. There are two types of sources of Mauryan History. One is Literary and the other is Archaeological. The literary sources include Kautilya's Arthasastra, Visakha Datta's Mudra Rakshasa , Megasthenese's Indica, Buddhist literature and Puranas.
2. It was a royal art patronized by Mauryan kings especially Ashoka. Pillars, Stupas, caves are the most prominent survivals.
3. It was expressed by the management that a village development officer should be basically interested in the welfare of the villagers; establish good relations with leaders and other influential persons; keep himself abreast of all the changes in the village locality.
4. During Gupta period (300-500 AD) large scale development of water resources took place. Artificial reservoirs or tanks too were built for irrigation purposes- often through damming smaller streams. One may also note here a series of tanks excavated at the site of Sringaverapura, near Allahabad (of 1st century BC).
5. He wrote two epic poems called Kumara sambhava, which means birth of Kumara and the Raghuvamsha, which means dynasty of Raghu. There are also two lyric poems written by Kalidasa known as Meghadutta that stands for cloud messenger and the Ritusamhara that means description of the seasons.
