Any metal or metal strip cannot be used in place of fuse wire because:

Metal wire or metal strip cannot be used insted of fuse wire as it has low melting point. This property is useful as when excess of current is passed through the wire the fuse gets heated up and melts, thus breaking the circuit and hence short circuit or overloading does not take place.
