2x + y = 5 --------(1)
x - 3y = 13
=> 2x - 6y = 26 ------(2) [ on multiplying both sides by 2]
On subtracting equation 2 from 1, we get
y + 6y = 5 - 26
=> 7y = - 21
=> y = - 3
Now,
On Substituting the value of y in equation 1, we get
2x - 3 = 5
=> 2x = 8
=> x = 4
