a) The carnivores are the secondary consumers (phagotrophs) they are heterotrophs which feed in other organisms. They are also called phagotrophs as they ingest food. As, they feed on the herbivores (first trophic level) they are placed third not second, also due to the lower energy they are getting, as of which they are required throughout the food chain to maintain the population, and it is on the THIRD TROPHIC LEVEL.

b) The one way transport (in simple words) is because that the energy in the cycle or the chain is never repeated again (unidirectional). It cannot pass in reverse direction. There is a decrease in the content and flow of energy with the rise of trophic level. The rest is dissipated as heat.
