At balance the voltage drop between A and X must balance the

the EMF of Q

i) increasing R will cause a smaller current thru AB thus the balance point will be shifted to the right to get the same voltage drop between AX

ii) at the balance point no current should flow thru S so the balance point should not change - the EMF of Q equals the voltage drop between A and X

iii)  replacing Q with a smaller EMF will then shift the balance point to the left so that the voltage drop between A and X will also decrease.
