The dust particles were in rest. When the carpet is beaten with a stick the carpet comes in motion, but the dust particles tends to remain in rest, according to the first law of motion.

That is why the dust particles come out.

Hope it helps...

Answer:

When a carpet is beaten, dust comes out of it as when we beat the carpet, the carpet comes to motion. However, due to inertia of rest the dust particles separate out from the carpet.

Explanation:

Q. Why does dust come out of a carpet when it is beaten?

To answer the question, it is important to know the concept of inertia.

Inertia is the inability to move. It is a property of an object which describes its inability to move.

Greater the inertia of an object, the more difficult it is for it to move. Also, inertia is directly proportional to mass of the object.

Now, coming to the question,

When a carpet is beaten, dust comes out of it as when we beat the carpet, the carpet comes to motion. However, due to inertia of rest the dust particles separate out from the carpet.
