Given :

Three resistances are connected as shown in the figure.

Voltage of battery = 2V

To Find :

  • Equivalent resistance
  • Current flow
  • pd across AB

Solution :

❖ In upper branch, two resistances are connected in series. Their equivalent resistance will be R₁ = 1 + 1 =

Finally equal resistances of 2Ω come in parallel. Hence met equivalent resistance of the circuit will be

➠ 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂

➠ 1/R = 1/2 + 1/2

➠ 1/R = 2/2

R = 1 Ω

As per ohm's law, current flow in the circuit is directly proportional to the applied potential difference.

Mathematically, V = I R

  • V denotes applied pd
  • I denotes current
  • R denotes resistance

By substituting the given values;

➙ 2 = I × 1

➙ I = 2/1

I = 2 A

We know that potential difference across each resistor remains same in parallel connection.

Hence net potential difference across upper branch will be 2V.

In upper branch, two equal resistances are connected in series.

Therefore pd across each resistor will be

➙ V(AB) = V/2

➙ V(AB) = 2/2

V(AB) = 1 volt
