The third estate paid a direct tax called taille. In direct tax on salt and tobacco Feudal dues were extracted from the peasants. The Church too extracted its share of taxes called tithes from the peasants, and finally, all members of the third estate had to pay taxes to the state.

The third estate among these three estates was comprised of all the commoners of France. Whereas, the first and the second estate consisted of the clergy and the nobility respectively. The first two estates were exempted or paid very fewer taxes. In short, all the taxes were levied from the third estate.
