If we differentiate it ,

Derivative =  cos x d sin x - sin x d cos x  / cos ^2 x

                  =  cos^2 x  + sin^2 x/ cos^2 x

                   = 1/ cos ^2 x

                    = sec^2 x

Now we know that tan x 's derivative is sec ^2 x and now we proved it .
