The period from 1905 was known as the era of extremism in the Indian National Movement. The extremists or the aggressive nationalists believed that success could be achieved through bold means and not through petitions.
1. Demand of Swaraj: They were the first to demand Swaraj as a matter of birth right. The Home Rule Movement had brought a new life in the national movement.
2. Mass movement: They involved the masses in the freedom struggle and broadened the social base of the National Movement e.g. Swadeshi movement. This movement helped to build indigenous industry base in India.
3. Spread of national education: The extremist tried to rope in the students in their movements and encouraged them to withdraw from government colleges and join the national Universities which were independent of government control. Private colleges were set up in Bengal and Madras by various trusts.
4. Upliftment of downtrodden: Lokmanya Tilak >>Voluntary associations were set up for usual sanitation, preventing police duties, and for natural calamities. They also pinned faith for constructive work, physical and moral uplift of Indians.
5. Nationalism: The extremist had no faith in the British sense of justice, or fair play. They believed that the Britishers had conquered India for selfish end and would continue to govern India for similar ends. So they promoted sense of Nationalism.
6. Support to revolutionary movements: Tilak supported VD Savarkar, Lala lajpatrai >> Bhagat Singh.

But above all, the unpractical nature of the extremist policies contributed to their failure. The people of India by temperament were not suited to the methods of openly challenging the authority of the British government. This was also seen in chowri-chowra incidence.
Even though people fully sympathized with the policies and programmes of the extremist, they were not willing to openly support or associate with them. In the absence of active support of the masses the movement was bound to end in failure to gain complete independence.
Despite these things one can not deny the unforgotable contribution of trio Lal-Bal-Pal among others to create hope in the masses that one day we will get independence from British rule.
