Let p = √5 + √3.

√5 + √3 = p

=> ( √5 + √3 )² = p²

=> 5 + 3 + 2√15 = p²

=> 2√15 = p² - 8

=> √15 = ( p² - 8 ) / 2

If p were rational then RHS would be rational.  But we are told that √15 is not rational.  Therefore p is irrational.
