Sound is a wave , it needs a medium to travel ... so it's direction and velocity is dependent on medium that is, it reflects(changes its path) when it fall on a hard surface and this leads to the formation of echoes ...therefore we can say that the property of reflection of sound leads to the formation of echoes...
time taken= 2 times (distance between source of sound and point of reflection of sound) ÷ velocity of sound
