India ranks number 1 in the production of jute products of which around 81% is produced from the mills that lay along the Hugli River.

The main reason for concentration of Jute factories around the Hugli River are:

⭐         West Bengal is the highest producer of raw jute.

★        Jute manufacturing requires a lot of water. Locating factories near the river ensures ample supply of water to the factory.

⭐     It also ensure easy import of goods required for the manufacturing of jute products and exports of finished products

★ They also get cheap labor from neighboring states Bihar and Orissa.
