Summary:

Throughout our lives, we humans tend to amass various possessions,  often unknowingly for a variety of reasons. These possessions may retain memories associated with them. These memories give the objects a sentimental  value far greater than their monetary value.  Oftentimes, we believe that these may be essential in the future, and resist throwing them out. Yet another reason, especially in older people, is lack of physical or mental energy, which is integral to throw anything away. In rare cases, the resistance to throwing out possessions can manifest as a mania, commonly termed hoarding.
