across a period new and new electrons get added sue to which nuclear charge increases and electron receives greater pull from the nucleus thus the atomic radius decreases left to right in a period while in a group new shells are added ultimately increasing the radius of atom thus the radius of atom decreases down a group

In groups atomic radius increases bcz when we go from top to bottom no. of shells increases, for ex- hydrogen atomic no. is 1 whereas sodium atomic no. is 11 when you will do the electronic configuration and draw their orbits according to their configuration you will be easily able to understand
