Function of peripheral nervous system are following

Explanation:

  • Central nervous system (CNS) is located within the skull and the vertebral column (purple and green); and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) lies outside the skull and the vertebral column.
  • In general, the peripheral nervous system consists of nerve bundles.
  • Brain and body are connected. Most of the time , a nerve bundle carries axons of motor and sensory neurons.
  • The sensors take information from your body to the brain. For the brain to act, commands from the brain are transmitted to the body.
  • If there were no peripheral nerves, you will have no information from the skin, muscles, pain receptors, joints, etcetera transmitted to the brain.
  • Without peripheral nerves, you will not be able to move, all commands from the brain to the muscles have to travel via peripheral motor axons.
  • Besides sensory and motor peripheral nerves, the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic), which controls your heart, glands, lungs, intestines, kidneys, etcetera also has peripheral nerves.
