Sex-limited traits are only expressed in one gender in a particular species and are thus responsible for the differences in characteristics between males and females. For example, heavy beard growth is a trait which is limited to men only.

Sex-linked traits are coded for by genes on the X or Y chromosome. An example of a sex-linked trait is haemophilia, a blood-clotting disease which occurs more frequently in men than in women. This is because haemophilia is a recessive condition carried on the X-chromosome. Men have only one X-chromosome, and thus stand more of a chance of being affected by haemophilia.
