A mass of 2.9kg suspended from a string of length 50cm is at rest . Another body of 100g moving horizontally with velocity 150m/s strikes and sticks to it. what is tension in the string when it makes the angle of 60degree with the horizontal?????

ANSWER

Since the collision is perfectly inelastic, conserving momentum, we get,

0.1×150=(2.9+0.1)×u

u=5 m/s

After this, applying conservation of energy,

(m+M) g(l(1−cos(60))+ ½ (m+M)v²

= ½ (m+M)u²

½ (m+M)v² = ½(m+M)u² −(m+M)gl(1−cos(60)

(m+M)v² =3×5²−2×3×10×0.5×(1−0.5)

⟹(m+M)v² =60

T =(m+M)gcos(θ)+(m+M)v² /l

=15+120

T=135 N

i hope it helps you.
