he subtracted 27 from x....

                    x -27

and get the one third of the exact number....

                 x *1/3   = 1/3 x

finally  the equation ....

x-27 =1/3 x

3(x-27)=x

3 x - 81 = x

3 x -x =81

2 x= 81

x =81 /2

x =40.5
