This is a question on equilibrium.

For a system in equilibrium clockwise moments equals to anticlockwise moments.

The formula for getting moments is as given below:

Moments = Force × distance

Since the pivot is placed at the midpoint each side of the seesaw is of length 30m

The moments on the left are anticlockwise whereas the moments on the right are clockwise moments.

Clockwise moments.

Let the weight be x

the distance from the pivot is :

30 -2 = 28 m

Moments = 28x

Anticlockwise moments

Force = 50N

Distance = 30 - 10 = 20 m

Moments = 20 × 50 = 1000

For the system to be in equilibrium the clockwise moments should be equal to the anticlockwise moments.

We therefore equate the two as follows :

28x = 1000

x = 1000/28 = 35.71 N

35.71 N
