Neutron has zero charge.
This was proved by certain experiments.

Firstly, the scientists proved that an atom as a whole is electrically neutral (i.e., as a whole it is neither positively nor negatively charged).

We know, that protons have positive charge (which is proved by the Alpha-particle Scattering experiment, because as they struck the protons, they got scattered (because they too are positively charged, hence two positively charged particles repel each other).

Next, since an atom is neutral, there must be some negatively charged particles too, which are exactly in the same number as the protons. JJ Thomson discovered the electrons.

Everything was clear. The atom was neutral because there were equal number of positively charged particles (protons), and negatively charged particles (electrons).

Mass of an electron is negligible, which does not constitute the mass of an atom.
Mass of a proton is 1 amu (Atomic mass unit).

However, when a helium atom was weighed, it was found that the total weight was 4 amu.

Scientists were confused. A helium atom comprises 2 protons and 2 electrons, so according to the (then) discoveries, the weight should have been 2 amu, but it was 4 amu! However, the atom was electrically neutral.

This led the scientists believe that there existed other particles too, which had no charge but had a mass same as that of protons.

Thus, if an atom of an element is weighed, it is found that the weight of the atom is more than the weight of protons in it. But electrons' weight is negligible. Again, the atom is electrically neutral.

THIS PROVES THAT THERE EXIST NEUTRONS, WHOSE MASS IS NOT NEGLIGIBLE, BUT CHARGE IS ZERO.

Relative charge of neutron 0 = relative mass of neutron = 1

Atoms have a tiny central nucleus with electrons whizzing around outside it. The electrons are fundamental particles. However, the nucleus is made from collections of two smaller particles: protons and neutrons.

The protons and neutrons lie in the tiny nucleus. They have very similar masses, but the proton has a positive charge whereas the neutron is not charged (hence the name neutron – neutral). The neutron helps keep the nucleus together.

The electron has a negative charge and very little mass (1800 times less than protons and neutrons).

Most of the mass of the atom is in the nucleus. However, despite carrying most of the atom’s mass, the diameter of the nucleus is 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of the atom. This means the nucleus is incredibly dense (as if the whole Earth were squashed into a football stadium).
