since disc is 2 D object,we can use perpendicular axis theorem. we know that from question,in z axis i.e. perpendicular to the disc plane ,Moment of inertia (M.O.I) is MR^2/2

so, Moment of inertia in planes of disc i.e. x plane and y plane = MOI IN X PLANE + MOI IN Y PLANE = MOI IN Z PLANE -- (i)

X and y plane will have same MOI because of symmetry. thus,MOI in both x and y plane will be equal.

therefore, by equation (i) , we can write

2 x MOI in y plane = MOI in z plane

MOI in y plane = [MR^2/2] ÷ 2

= MR^2/4 (answer)

also,MOI in x plane and y plane means moment of inertia about an axis present in x and y plane respectively.
