4x = y+138 ⇒ 4x-y = 138
Add both of them
7x = 280
x = 40
and y = 22

y = 4x - 38
and substitute the first equation in second equation
3x + 4x - 138 = 142
7x = 142 + 138
7x = 280
x = 40
then y value = ( 40 *4 ) -138
160 - 138 = 22
hence x value = 40
and y value = 22
