After Independence of Srilanka in 1948,The majoritarianiasm was adopted by Sinhalese, thus disregarding Tamils who constituted minorities.
In 1956,an act was passed which declared Sinhalese as the official language.
University jobs and seats in educational inst. were reserved for Sinhalese.
The state also stipulated that it would foster Buddhism.
All these measures led to distrust between the two and hence led to the agitation for Independent Tamil Ealem.

But continuous aleination of Tamils led to Civil War which caused heavy loss of life and property.
Many were also forced to leave the country as refugees.
