Question :

A fan has been acted on by a torque τ which changes its angular momentum from Lₒ to 8Lₒ in 2sec. Find out magnitude of torque..

Solution :

We are given that,

  • Initial angular momentum = Lₒ
  • Final angular momentum = 8Lₒ
  • Time interval = 2s

We have to find magnitude of torque.

❖ Newton's second law of motion for rotation is given by,

  • Torque is measured as the rate of change of angular momentum per unit time.
  • Torque is a rotational analogue of force.
  • It is an axial vector quantity.
  • SI unit : N m

Mathematically, τ = dL / dt

» τ denotes torque

» dL denotes change in angular momentum

» dt denotes time interval

By substituting the given values;

➙ τ = (L₂ - L₁) / dt

➙ τ = (8Lₒ - Lₒ) / 2

➙ τ = 7Lₒ/2

τ = 3.5Lₒ N m

Hola mate

Here is your answer -

We are given that,

  • Initial angular momentum = Lₒ
  • Final angular momentum = 8Lₒ
  • Time interval = 2s

We have to find magnitude of torque

Newton's second law of motion for rotation is given by,

Torque is measured as the rate of change of angular momentum per unit time.

Torque is a rotational analogue of force.

It is an axial vector quantity.

SI unit : N m

Mathematically, τ = dL / dt

  • τ denotes torque
  • dL denotes change in angular momentum
  • dt denotes time interval

By substituting the given values;

τ = (L₂ - L₁) / dt

τ = (8Lₒ - Lₒ) / 2

τ = 7Lₒ/2

τ = 3.5Lₒ N m
