Question:- Which term of this progression 20, 19¼, 18½, 17¾,..... is the first negative term?

Solution :-

Given A.P. :- 20, 19¼, 18½, 17¾,......

a = 20

d = 19¼ - 20

=>d= 77/4 -20

=>d= ( 77 - 80)/4

=> d = -3/4

Since, It is asked First Negative term.

=> an < 0

an = a + ( n-1)d < 0

=> 20 + (n-1)(-3/4) <0

=> 20 -3n/4 + 3/4 <0

=> (80 - 3n +3)/4<0

=> (83 -3n)/4<0

=> 83 -3n < 0

=> 83 < 3n

=> n > 83/3

=> n > 27.66 (approximately 28)

=> n > 28 .

Hence,

28 is the First Negative term of this Arithmetic Progression.

Thanks!!
