On observation:

 sum of diameters of two adjacent circle = side of square

Since diameter of all circles is equal. Let the diameter of each circle be 2a.

⇒ 2a + 2a = side of square = 14 cm

⇒ 4a = 14cm

⇒ 2a = 7 cm = diameter

⇒ a = 3.5 cm = radius

      Hence,

Area of each circle = π(3.5)² cm²

                    = 38.5 cm^2

Area of four such circle = 4*38.5 cm^2

                  = 154

Therefore, shaded area

⇒ area of sq. - area of circle

⇒ 196 - 154 cm^2

⇒ 42 cm^2
