The original price was X rupees.
Let's say the man would have bought N plants

N = (2800/X)

XN = 2800

But now the price is reduced by 1 rupee for each plant. Hence the new price is (X-1) rupees.

Now the man bought 10 more plants than before. Hence he bought (N + 10) plants with 2730 rupees.

So the equation we can form is

N + 10 = (2730/(X-1))

(N+10)(X-1) = 2730

NX + 10X - N - 10 = 2730

2800 + 10X - (2800/X) - 10 = 2730

(2800/X) - 10X = 2800 - 10 - 2730

(2800/X) - 10X = 60

(280/X) - X = 6

280 - X^2 = 6X

X^2 + 6X - 280 = 0

X^2 + 20X - 14X - 280 = 0

X(X + 20)-14(X + 20) = 0

(X - 14)(X + 20) = 0

Now X is 14 or (-20). But X cannot be negative as it is the price of the plant.

Hence X is 14
